One Tank Spring Break Get-Aways

Don’t want to fight the lines and delays, and incur the expense of air travel this spring break, but you still want to get out of town.  Here are some “one tank” destinations within a 400 mile radius of Lafayette, that can be interesting and fun places to go.

North or South?  What direction do we go?
For many of us heading south to get out of the cold weather is what we have in mind.  For others going north to enjoy some winter recreation is their idea of a break.

Heading South
Driving 400 miles south will get you to the Alabama state line, but unfortunately not all the way to Florida. So laying out on a beach may not be in the cards, but just getting someplace warmer, without snow, can offer lots of fun things to do.

Louisville, Kentucky
Just 2 ½ hours south of Lafayette, Louisville, located along the Ohio River, will make you feel like you are entering the south.  Moderate temps and a number of indoor activities make getting around comfortable and easy.  You can even walk across the Ohio River on the pedestrian Big Four Bridge.

Sites to see include Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum, Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, Muhammad Ali Center and Schimpff’s Confectionery.

And for the adults you may want to check out the distilleries along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

Nashville, Tennessee
For the country music fan take this opportunity to visit the Grand Ole Opry, Ryman Auditorium and the Country Music Hall of Fame.  Kids activities also include the Nashville Zoo, numerous parks and the Adventure Science Center.

Don’t miss out on eating at some of Nashville’s most iconic restaurants including the Loveless Café, Monell’s and Arnold’s Country Kitchen.

Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, TN
Another fun family destination is to head for Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, TN at the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  This area is the home of Dollywood and numerous other family attractions, although some of them don’t open until early April.

Heading North
From Lafayette you can head north to ski, visit the many attractions in Chicago, and even go to the mecca of indoor water parks.

Ski Michigan
With more than 51 ski areas, over 260 chairlifts, 1,000 runs, 50 terrain parks and an annual snowfall of more than 100″ of Lake Effect snow, Michigan offers skiers the best snow and best skiing in the Midwest.

Wisconsin Dells Indoor Water Parks
The Wisconsin Dells offers a multitude of indoor waterparks and water playgrounds with accommodations to suit every fancy. They are open 12 months a year, so they are a great escape when the weather isn’t so nice outside.  The water slides will keep your kids entertained for hours.

Chicago
Not known as a warm weather spot in March, none-the-less Chicago can provide a number of fun and educational excursions for those who want to travel just a couple of hours.

The Shedd Aquarium, Museum of Science and Industry, Navy Pier, outdoor skating at Millennium Park, the Field Museum of Natural History and Adler Planetarium all offer wonderful adventures for your family.

Close to Home
Indianapolis
Wanting to stay closer to home.  If you haven’t already, the Indianapolis Children’s Museum (the largest children’s museum in the world), the Indianapolis Zoo and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum are great spots to visit. A note on ticket prices; they are less expensive if purchased in advance.

Auto Tech Talk:  Prepping for Your Spring Break Trip
Getting your vehicle ready for a long trip is just one more thing that needs to be done prior to heading out on your spring break adventure. Making sure your vehicle is safe and in top working order eliminates potential problems down the road.

Having your oil changed and your belts, brakes, battery, tires, wiper blades and alignment checked are simple things that will help keep your mind on your trip and not on your vehicle.
