Timely Timing Belt Maintenance

Your timing belt can leave you stranded in the middle of the road in the middle of the night.

Many of us do a pretty good job of making sure our oil gets changed, our tires rotated and our brakes replaced when needed.  But we often overlook one of the more crucial parts of our engine that keeps it running smoothly, the timing belt.

The timing belt allows the crankshaft to drive the camshaft, which opens and closes the valves, and without it, the engine can’t run.  So when it breaks, your vehicle stops, wherever you are at the time.

Know When to Replace Your Vehicle’s Timing Belt
Most auto manufacturer’s recommend replacing your timing belt between 60,000 and 100,000 miles.  Do not try to squeeze extra life out of your timing belt.  If it breaks when you are driving it can damage your entire engine; meaning hundreds of dollars’ worth of auto repairs.

Replacing a timing belt for preventive reasons typically costs $500 to $900. However, replacing a broken timing belt may cost up to $2,000 or more, if it caused damage to the valves, pistons or water pump.

Timing Belt

Common signs that a timing belt is going bad are …

  • Ticking noises coming from the engine.
  • Engine won’t turn over. If the timing belt has broken, the engine will not start.
  • Engine misfires
  • Oil leaking from in front of the motor.

Replacing a timing belt involves snaking the belt around multiple pulleys and adjusting the tension on these pulleys so the engine runs smoothly. We highly recommend having a professional auto technician make this repair.
