For many families Spring Break is a time parents and kids (young and older) enjoy heading to warmer climates to get away from the endless chill of our local winters. It also a time that makes for great family memories.
Warm Weather Bound
Finding great family vacation destinations that you can drive to from central Indiana with some sun and fun can be a little bit of a challenge. It is roughly a 12 hour drive to get to the warmer spots in Florida along the Gulf Coast, with Disney World and Orlando another half day journey. Two and a half million visitors make Orlando one of the country’s top Spring Break destinations. Just an hour from Orlando is the Space Coast and the Kennedy Space Center, whose space camp and astronaut encounters make for a great day.
If baseball is your thing you can catch spring training for a number of Major League Baseball teams in Florida including the Houston Astros who train near Orlando in Kissimmee.
Taking In Our Nation’s Capital
Spring is a terrific time to visit Washington, DC where some of the nation’s finest museums and annual festivals are totally free. March 20 through April 12 is the period for the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Special events marking 150 years since the assassination of Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre on April 14, 1865 are planned throughout this year. Check out Eileen Ogintz’s “Kids Guide to Washington DC” for more ideas.
Great Smoky Mountain Adventure
Another fun family destination that is a little closer is Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, TN, the home of Dollywood and numerous other family attractions. At the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park this area has a lot to offer, although some of the attractions don’t open until early April.
Destinations Closer to Home
The Indianapolis Children’s Museum (the largest children’s museum in the world) is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. Visit a mummified dinosaur in Dinosphere: Now You’re in Their World and the extraordinary Fireworks of Glass exhibit. Learn how children shaped history in The Power of Children: Making a Difference. From Jan. 31-July 26 go Inside Hollywood Film & TV – You’re on the Set! with real props and costumes available for budding actors.
The Great Wolf Lodge indoor water park resort in Cincinnati/Mason, OH is another close-to-home multi-activity venue geared to kids of all ages. Once you’ve registered at the hotel, all the activities are available to everyone.
Insuring Your Journey Is Uneventful
Getting your vehicle ready for a long trip is just one more thing that needs to be done prior to heading out on your spring break adventure. Making sure your vehicle is safe and in top working order eliminates potential problems down the road.
Having your oil changed and your belts, brakes, battery, tires, wiper blades and alignment checked are simple things that will help keep your mind on your trip and not on your vehicle.
