Labor Day Marks the End of Summer and Honors America’s Workers

Labor Day for most of us represents two major events … the end of summer and the opportunity to recognize the millions of Americans that go to work every day.

Recognizing Our Workers

Labor Day, which is celebrated on the first Monday in September, honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the growth, strength, prosperity and well-being of our country.

Happy Labor Day

In 1887 Oregon was the first state of the United States to make it an official public holiday. By the time it became an official federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day.

This holiday is still celebrated with parades in many communities honoring American workers.

End of Summer

Labor Day is also seen by many as the “unofficial end of summer” because most schools have begun classes and many fall activities including high school, college and professional sports begin about this time. To mark this occasion many of us take advantage of the long weekend to head for the beach or lake, or plan a family picnic and barbecue.
