What is ADAS? It’s really just a fancy term for advanced car tech. ADAS is also known as driver assistance systems or simply, safety technology.

This set of driver-assist features includes technology like automatic braking, lane keep assist, active cruise control, forward collision warning systems, and night vision cameras.
Let Beck’s Auto Center, your auto repair shop in Lafayette, Indiana, tell you more about ADAS and why it’s important to maintain this on your vehicle!

Automated driver-assist features help make cars safer for everyone on the road. Modern cars have come a long way from where they were 50 years ago and these new automated driver assists help keep drivers safe and prevent crashes from occurring in a variety of ways.

What is the difference between passive and active safety systems?

There are two types of advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS):

  • Passive, which helps prevent collisions through alerts or other warnings
  • Active, which aids in avoiding collisions by actively controlling your vehicle

Active ADAS includes lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, automatic braking, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, self-parking technology, and blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert. Passive systems only warn about danger without actively helping to avoid it.

In our first installment, we discussed Electronic Stability Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, and Lane Assist and Blind Spot Monitor components. Today we cover 3 ADAS components that we just can’t live without:

  • Night vision
  • 360 surround view
  • Rear view camera

How does ADAS use Night Vision to increase safety?

Most ADAS use Night Vision to detect pedestrians who might be in danger of being hit by your vehicle. When it detects that there is a pedestrian or other object on a collision course with your vehicle, then it will sound an alarm that warns you of an impending accident. It will then warn you to take evasive action if possible.

If there is no way for you to avoid a collision, then it will activate brakes on its own, reducing speed as much as possible without causing an accident with another vehicle. This system helps prevent accidents while increasing safety for both drivers and passengers.

What is 360 Surround View?

360 Surround View allows you to see all around your vehicle. This is great for parking assistance in crowded streets. This feature also helps you see clearly when backing up, allowing for a complete view of those behind your car as well as possible hazards passing by you.

Some vehicles have blind-spot monitoring, which alerts drivers if there’s a car next to them or coming up quickly from behind so they can take evasive action before an accident occurs. Another benefit of some advanced driver assist systems is adaptive cruise control technology.

How is a Rear view Camera beneficial?

A 360 surround-view enables your car to see in every direction, while a rearview camera helps you get out of tight spots with ease. A rear camera with wide-angle lens ensures excellent viewing at night and during adverse weather conditions. This is especially helpful if you’re parking; we all know that parallel parking is hard enough as it is!

How do I know when to call an auto repair shop for ADAS repair or maintenance?

What types of things could go wrong with your car’s ADAS systems? It depends on which components we’re talking about.

If you experience a problem with an adaptive cruise control system, for example, there could be a short in one of your radar sensors. If your lane departure warning system is giving false warnings for some reason, it might be time to give your vehicle a tune-up.

Our certified technicians will help diagnose these problems quickly so that they don’t lead to bigger issues down the road.
