vehicle safety
A Solid Foundation
There are a variety of components that make up your vehicle’s steering and suspension. All of these are key to the safety of the vehicle. Together they largely determine the vehicle’s ride and handling.
The Suspension maintains the relationship between the wheels and frame. The suspension system interacts with the steering system to provide vehicle control.
When working properly, the suspension helps absorb the energy from the roads, irregularities such as potholes and helps maintain vehicle stability.
The steering system transmits your input from the steering wheel to the steering gear and other steering wheel components to control the vehicle direction.
How Do I Know I Have Suspension/Steering Problems?
There are a few main signs that you may have an issue with your suspension or steering system.
- Hearing noises when going over bumps
- Your vehicle bounces
- It’s difficult to turn the wheel
- You have uneven tire wear
- The wheels wander
What Are the Different Suspension & Steering Parts?
Here at Beck’s, we work on a variety of suspension and steering components including the parts listed below.
Ball joints
Allows a smooth ride by providing a pivoting movement between the steering knuckles and control arms.
Tie rods
Tie rods help push and pull the tires as the steering wheel is turned.
Idler / pitman arms
The idler or pitman arms work as a lever to turn the steering linkage.
Steering gears
The steering gears transmit the input from the steering wheel to the steering assembly to turn the car’s wheels.
Control arms & bushings
Control arms allow the wheels to move up and down without changing their position. Bushings cushion the suspension system for smoother ride comfort.
Stabilizer rods & Links
The stabilizer rod keeps the car stable when going around turns so it doesn’t roll too much.
Shocks & struts
Shocks and struts improve road feel and handling properties, as well as improving ride quality. Â Even though they do the same thing, shocks and struts are completely different parts.
Wheel bearings
Wheel bearings are fitted on the wheel hub and reduce friction as the wheels turn.
