Tune-up
A Well-Tuned Machine
Tune-Ups are an essential part of routine maintenance to keep your car going strong. This involves inspecting and/or replacing different components on your vehicle’s ignition system and various filters.
Keeping these systems running smoothly will ensure that you get the best fuel economy and help vital engine parts last longer when you visit the tune-up shop.
What Is My Car’s Ignition System?
The ignition system in your car is what provides the electrical spark to ignite the air/fuel mixture at the right intervals to make the engine run.
spark plugs
The spark plugs are the parts that actually make the spark inside the cylinder to ignite the fuel. Problems with spark plugs can cause misfires and running rough. During a tune-up, the spark plugs will be inspected and changed if needed.
Ignition Wires
The ignition wires carry electricity to the spark plugs so they can ignite the fuel. Over time, these wires wear down and become less reliable. You may experience a rough idle, loss of performance, or a cylinder that doesn’t fire. These will be inspected during your tune-up and will be replaced if necessary.
Ignition Coils
The coils take a small amount of electricity from the battery and turn it into a much bigger charge. These coils will eventually wear out, causing misfires, rough idle, loss of acceleration, and poor fuel economy. These will also be inspected during your tune-up and replaced as necessary.
Distributor Cap & Rotor
The rotor inside the distributor cap spins to provide electricity to the cylinders via the distributor. The spinning wears down the contacts on the rotor, and it needs replaced regularly. A bad distributor causes misfires or failure to start the engine. It is recommended to replace the cap and the rotor during a tune-up.

Inspect the Filters
There are many different types of filters that help remove pollutants from the various parts
of your vehicle—from vital engine components to the air in your car’s cabin.
Engine Air Filter
Your engine air filter cleans the air that is then mixed with the fuel to provide combustion. A clogged air filter will reduce performance and will cause poor fuel economy in cars with carburetors.
Fuel Filter
The fuel filter removes potentially hazardous contaminants from the fuel entering the engine. If the filter gets clogged, it can result in low fuel pressure, hesitant acceleration, and can even ruin your fuel pump.
PCV Valve
Spent gas from the engine doesn't always end up in the exhaust. About 70% of this gas is actually unspent fuel and needs to be rerouted back into the engine. The PCV valve does this, but over time, deposits will gum up the valve, and it needs to be replaced.
